What are options?
- A call option gives you the right to BUY at a set price (the strike price). You buy calls when you think the price will go UP.
- A put option gives you the right to SELL at a set price. You buy puts when you think the price will go DOWN — or to protect (hedge) a position you already have.
- You pay a premium to buy an option. If the price doesn't move in your favor, you lose the premium. If it does, your profit can be unlimited (for calls) or substantial (for puts).
- Expiry date: Options expire. European-style options can only be exercised at expiry. American-style can be exercised anytime before.
- Key concepts: strike price, expiry, premium, implied volatility (IV), the Greeks (delta, gamma, theta, vega).
- Options are NOT the same as perpetual futures. Futures have unlimited loss potential. Options have limited loss — you can only lose the premium you paid.
Decentralized options platforms
Derive (formerly Lyra)
- Rebranded from Lyra Finance in 2024.
- On-chain options protocol on its own L2 (Derive Chain, built on the OP Stack).
- European-style options on ETH, BTC, and more.
- AMM-based: Traders trade against liquidity pools with dynamic pricing.
- Advanced features: spreads, straddles, hedging.
- DERIVE token (previously LYRA) for governance.
- Integrated with other DeFi protocols for collateral management.
Strengths: Truly decentralized, DeFi-native, growing feature set.
Limitations: Lower liquidity than Deribit, options are complex for most DeFi users, gas costs.
Aevo
- Ethereum L2 (custom OP Stack) for options AND perps.
- Order book model — more like a CEX experience.
- Options on ETH, BTC, and altcoins.
- Pre-launch token markets (unique feature).
- Backed by Paradigm.
- AEVO token for governance.
Strengths: Order book gives tighter spreads, perps + options on one platform, pre-launch markets.
Limitations: More centralized sequencer, smaller options volume than Deribit.
Thales / Overtime
- Binary options and sports markets on Optimism/Arbitrum/Base.
- Simplified: “Will ETH be above $3,000 at expiry?” — yes/no.
- Simpler than traditional options — no Greeks, no complex pricing.
- THALES token for governance.
Strengths: Simple for beginners, sports integration (Overtime).
Limitations: Binary only (limited strategies), lower liquidity.
Premia
- Options AMM on Arbitrum.
- American-style options — can exercise anytime before expiry.
- Premia V3: concentrated liquidity for options.
- PREMIA token, vxPREMIA for governance.
Strengths: American-style (more flexible), nice UI.
Limitations: Smaller volume, limited asset selection.
Centralized options platforms
Deribit
- The dominant crypto options exchange — approximately 80%+ of all crypto options volume.
- Based in Panama, not US-accessible.
- European-style options on BTC and ETH.
- Professional-grade: full order book, complex strategies, portfolio margining.
- Block trading for institutions.
Strengths: Massive liquidity, tightest spreads, professional tools, the standard for crypto options.
Limitations: Centralized (custodial), not US-available, KYC required, no altcoin options.
OKX
- Major CEX with options trading.
- BTC and ETH options.
- Growing options volume, competing with Deribit.
- Part of a full-service exchange (spot, futures, options, earn).
Strengths: All-in-one platform, decent liquidity.
Limitations: Custodial, KYC, regulatory uncertainty in some regions.
Binance
- BTC and ETH options (European-style).
- Integrated with the world's largest CEX.
Strengths: Massive user base, familiar platform.
Limitations: Options volume much smaller than Deribit, custodial, regulatory issues.

Decentralized vs centralized — what matters for options
- Liquidity: Deribit dominates. If you're trading large positions, spreads matter more than decentralization. Decentralized options have improving but still lower liquidity.
- Self-custody: On Derive/Aevo/Premia, your collateral stays on-chain. On Deribit/OKX/Binance, you trust the exchange with your funds.
- Access: Deribit and most CEXs exclude US users. Decentralized platforms are globally accessible.
- Complexity: Options are already complex. Decentralized platforms add gas costs and on-chain mechanics on top. CEXs offer a smoother UX.
- Settlement: Decentralized = settled on-chain (verifiable). Centralized = settled internally (trust required).
Common options strategies
- Covered call: Sell calls on tokens you hold → earn premium, give up upside beyond the strike.
- Protective put: Buy puts on tokens you hold → insurance against drops.
- Straddle: Buy both a call and a put at the same strike → profit from big moves in either direction.
- Spread: Buy and sell options at different strikes → limited risk, limited profit.
Risks specific to options
- Premium loss: If the option expires worthless, you lose 100% of what you paid.
- Time decay (theta): Options lose value as expiry approaches.
- Implied volatility: High IV = expensive premiums. IV crush after events can hurt.
- Liquidity: Illiquid options have wide bid-ask spreads — hard to exit at a fair price.
- Smart contract risk: Applies to all decentralized platforms.
- AMM pricing risk: AMM-based options may have worse pricing than order books.
How to choose
- Want maximum liquidity and professional tools → Deribit
- Want decentralized, self-custody, DeFi-native → Derive
- Want options + perps on one decentralized platform → Aevo
- Want simple binary bets → Thales
- Want American-style (exercise anytime) → Premia
- New to options? Start with small positions. Options are powerful but can lose 100% of premium.
