Different tools, different questions
The crypto data ecosystem is fragmented. One tool tracks TVL, another tracks prices, another tracks your wallet. Understanding what each tool is for saves you time. Instead of searching for one tool that does everything, use the right tool for the right question.
DefiLlama
DefiLlama is the DeFi data aggregator. It is fully open source, has no ads, and no token — just data.
It tracks Total Value Locked (TVL) across 3,000+ protocols and 200+ chains, making it the most comprehensive source for understanding where DeFi money is flowing. DefiLlama shows protocol TVL rankings, chain TVL breakdowns, yield farming opportunities with yield rankings, stablecoin data, bridge volume, protocol fees and revenue, liquidation data, and fundraising rounds.
DefiLlama does not track your personal portfolio or individual wallet positions. It answers "where is DeFi money?" — not "where is my money?"
Strengths: most comprehensive DeFi data, fully open source, unbiased (no token, no ads), trusted industry standard.
Limitations: protocol-level data only, not personal portfolio tracking. Shows aggregate flows, not your individual positions.
Best for: researching protocols before depositing, comparing yields, understanding DeFi market trends.
DexScreener
DexScreener provides real-time DEX trading data and charts. It tracks new token launches and pair creations across virtually every DEX on every chain.
It features live price charts with TradingView integration, and shows price, volume, liquidity, holder counts, and transaction history for any traded token. DexScreener also offers token profiles, trending tokens, and new pair alerts — making it the go-to tool for spotting new tokens early.
Strengths: fastest for finding new tokens, real-time trading data, great charts, multi-chain coverage.
Limitations: trading-focused — doesn't show your portfolio, DeFi positions, or risk analysis. The culture skews heavily toward memecoins and active trading.
Best for: traders looking for new opportunities, checking token prices, monitoring trading activity.
CoinGecko
CoinGecko is a comprehensive crypto market data platform, operating since 2014. It tracks 14,000+ tokens with prices, market cap, volume, and supply data.
Each token page includes historical charts, exchange listings, and developer activity. CoinGecko also covers DeFi metrics, NFT floor prices, and exchange rankings. Its API is widely used by other tools and projects across the ecosystem. CoinGecko offers a Candy rewards program and a premium subscription tier.
Strengths: broadest coverage of tokens (including small caps), trusted price data, good overview of the entire market.
Limitations: DeFi position data is limited, portfolio tracking is basic (manual entry only), not wallet-aware.
Best for: checking token prices, researching new tokens, getting a market overview.
CoinMarketCap
CoinMarketCap is similar to CoinGecko in scope, and has been owned by Binance since 2020. It tracks 10,000+ tokens and offers exchange rankings, airdrop listings, and educational content through its academy.
Strengths: large user base, educational content, Binance integration.
Limitations: Binance ownership raises concerns about neutrality — Binance-listed exchanges have sometimes appeared to rank higher. Less DeFi depth than DefiLlama. Portfolio tracking is manual.
Best for: mainstream crypto price checking, beginners exploring the market.
Dune Analytics
Dune Analytics is a custom blockchain analytics platform powered by SQL queries. Community analysts build and share dashboards that cover almost every protocol, metric, and on-chain event imaginable.
Dune provides access to raw on-chain data, custom metrics, and fully transparent methodology — every dashboard's queries are visible and forkable.
Strengths: most flexible — if you can write SQL, you can answer any on-chain question. Community dashboards cover almost everything.
Limitations: requires SQL knowledge for custom queries. Not a portfolio tracker. Community dashboards can be wrong or outdated.
Best for: analysts, researchers, and power users who want custom data.
CleanSky
CleanSky is a personal portfolio tracker — it answers "where is my money?"
Paste any wallet address and see everything across 34+ networks and 484+ protocols. CleanSky automatically detects and categorizes your positions into savings, loans, investments, and holdings. It provides risk analysis covering volatility, liquidity, sovereignty, and smart contract risk.
There is no signup, no wallet connection required, and all data processing uses client-side encryption.
Strengths: answers the personal question ("how much do I have, what's at risk?"), privacy-first, no jargon.
Limitations: not a market data tool — doesn't track TVL rankings, new token launches, or market trends.
Best for: understanding your own portfolio, risk awareness, quick wallet checks.
